About The Exploding Whales:
The Exploding Whales alternate identity is a reference tothe infamous event that occurredon November 12th, 1970 in the city of Florence, Oregon. A 45-foot-long, 8-ton sperm whale washed ashore on the coast. The states Highway division had jurisdiction over the beaches and, after consulting with the United States Navy, they decided to ‘remove’ the whale using dynamite. The hope was thatthe explosion would result in small pieces for animals to consume. Instead, the result went down in the history books.
The Eugene Emeralds suited up as the Exploding Whales 6 times in the inaugural 2023 season. The Emeralds worked closely with the city of Florence,its mayor, city council, and other business leaders tocreate an identity that can be embraced by all.
